Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, social worker, and women's rights advocate. She holds a Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University and has received numerous honorary degrees from institutions such as Rhodes University, the University of Alberta, and Polytechnic University. Gbowee is the founder and president of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa and was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggle for women's rights and peace-building work. She is also known for leading the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, a coalition that united Christian and Muslim women in a nonviolent movement that played a pivotal role in ending Liberia's civil war in 2003.
